"Reinforce Clarity" by Patrick Lencioni

According to Patrick, when it comes to building a healthy organization, the fourth discipline is all about reinforcing clarity through human systems. Human systems are anything that comes about during the employee lifecycle. First from how we decide who to interview and how we interview them to, who we decide to actually hire, how we set their goals, how we do performance reviews, how we reward people, compensate them, how we decide who to fire or to let go, and even how we make decisions.

In many organizations, this is all left up to Human Resources but the key is that the leaders of the organizations have to be involved in this from the beginning because these are not merely bureaucratic systems.

Unfortunately, many organizations deviate toward bureaucracy either because they think this is all about avoiding lawsuits or because they're borrowing generic systems from world-class companies. However, that doesn't really fit the unique culture of an organization.

So, organizations and leaders should work with a human resources department to customize processes in the above-mentioned areas that are designed specifically to reinforce the answers to those six critical questions in the discipline of organizational health.

When we do this, we turn processes that were once thought to be administrative or bureaucratic into really key tools for reinforcing our culture, driving clarity, and creating true competitive advantage.
