According to Brene, somehow we have become a culture of being disengaged. A cool person is someone who says "I don't really care about that" and it's almost like disengagement is new cool now and you're not supposed to care. Brene says that such cool is something that's really hard for her to get out from underneath. She says she gives herself the permission to care about everything she wants - permission to be excited, laugh, and be uncool. She says that cool is armor with which it's so easy to go through life. However, she feels that "at the end of the day, at the end of the week, and at the end of her life, she wants to be able to say that 'I contributed more than I criticized.'"
