Simon Sinek in his video “How Teachers Change the Culture & Climate of Schools” says that a company is a group of people who come together for a common cause, therefore, hospitals, schools are all companies, it's all the same thing. The ‘Why” of the school is extremely important to understand because not all schools have the same cultures, different schools have different cultures depending on the leadership of the schools. For example, if there are two highly rated schools that we want to send our kids to, the reason we visit the school and do our research about it is that we want to understand the culture of the school. We want our kids to be a good fit in the culture so that they can more naturally thrive in that culture and that's really really important. So, school is the same, a school has a culture and we want to articulate the “Why” of the school, if there is an origin story of the school, we want to go back to that origin story, if there is good leadership then we want to know the “Why” of the principal or the administrator. The goal is to articulate the “Why” and just like a company we want to write it on the walls, we want it at the beginning of announcements, we want to give awards to teachers, students, and people who are advancing “the why” and upholding the values. You treat it like any other, it's got marketing, it's got incentive structures, you want to hire teachers who believe in the “Why”, you say “This is what we stand for, do you think you'd like to be here” and you have all the different personality types, all the different diversity, and all the people who come to a school, make it wonderful and fantastic and bring that cause to life. It works exactly the same way, you can replace the word “Company'' with “School” and it will read perfectly fine.
