Continuous and comprehensive evaluation (CCE) refers to educational assessment practice in which a student’s performance is evaluated regularly in all the domains of development namely affective, cognitive, psycho-motor. CCE involves both formative and summative assessments. Formative assessments are a wide variety of assessments conducted during students’ learning process and it helps to diagnose students who might be facing some learning issues and remediate them. Furthermore, regular feedback on formative assessments help students take ownership of their learning.
Summative assessments are conducted at the end of the term to test conceptual understanding. Such assessments can help in gauging the effectiveness of teaching methodologies. CCE is can help in multiple ways to improve student learning:
1. It helps the teachers draft lesson plans and teaching plans based on:
- Learning level of children
- Difference in learning level within classroom
2. It helps improve peer learning opportunities as teachers can pair diverse groups of students on task to encourage them in enhancing each other’s learning
3. It leads to holistic development. While creating teaching plans teachers need to consider all the domains of child development, viz. affective, cognitive, and psycho-motor to give students an enriching learning experience. Owing to this, it also encourages students to participate in co-curricular activities like sports, drama, music, etc.
- It gives emphasis on thought process and discourages memorization
- It helps make evaluation an integral part of the teaching-learning process.
- It helps diagnose and remediate children at the early stages of learning.
- CCE is a progressive assessment tool that aims to promote learning through assessment rather than testing students with the fear of failure.
